Bullet Pencils! :)

I've really been digging the brass Midori pencil.  By all means, I looked into it deeper and found out about these old bullet pencils that they used to use as promotional items.  :D  And so begins my newest collection addiction...  hehe!

Why this over my rOtring Rapid Pro and the like?  There's just something more satisfying about sharpening and using a wooden pencil than a mechanical one.  I'll probably toss some Blackwings in these shortly (I'm wanting to try the newer Pearl line).  It kinda defeats the iconic eraser of the Blackwings... but I do love the way the wood smells and the graphite writes.  :)

My favorite is definitely the red one without the clip or eraser.  The second favorite is probably that black one.  :D

What's nice about these is that you can replace the pencils with regular round ones that you find just about anywhere - with the Midori, you had to hack it a little with some support since the pencils they use are of larger diameter.

I've yet to figure out the eraser part... I'm kinda picky with my erasers, even moreso than I am about the type of lead I'm writing with.

Cheers!

    1. :) These are pencils. The advertisement ones run anywhere from $1.00 - $hundreds, depending on what company it was from and the condition. The modern version by Midori are about $20.00.

  2. There must be something about bullet pencils... I too have only recently discovered them and find myself on the cusp of a mini-obsession. I decided to surf the OCD wave and look into the history of the bullet pencil then post about it - http://thejungleisneutral.wordpress.com/2013/10/27/the-bullet-pencil/

So a normal pencil won't fit in the Midori bullet pencil? I don't like that at all. That's the Gillette business model rearing its ugly head again and I shave with a straight razor.

I've had an idea about replacing the erasers of vintage bullet pencils. You can pick up sets of leather punches (the hammer type) which include a punch of the correct diameter. This should allow even the pickiest pencil geek to use their favourite eraser in their vintage bullet pencils.

    Anyway, great post. Cheers.

    1. Great writeup! :D Yeah, a "standard" pencil is just a tad smaller in diameter than the Midori. You can fix that pretty easily by adding some sort of cushioning though. :(

    2. Also, wonderful tip about using the leather punch. :D I hadn't ever thought of that.
